July 1997 INTERNATIONAL ORTHOPEDIC & SURGICAL FELLOWSHIP (Ospital NG Maynila; Manila, Philippines)
Surgically removed sebaceous and ganglion cysts from Philippine patients under the direction of a board certified podiatric surgeon; learned how to suture and performed one-handed and two-handed ties; rotated through various Departments including OB-GYN, Emergency Medicine and Dermatology and conducted histories and physical examinations on patients; administered anesthetic injections and desiccated plantar verrucae.
10/93 - 7/95 RESEARCH ASSOCIATE IN GASTROENTEROLOGY (Sinai Hospital; Baltimore, MD)
Isolated and characterized exfoliated colonic epithelial cells from human stool samples; investigated the early detection of colon carcinoma by p53 and K-ras mutations in colonic epithelial cells isolated from stool specimens; investigated the effects of beta-carotene on experimentally induced esophageal carcinomas in rats (a controlled study); performed various tissue culture techniques; trained internal medicine residents in various laboratory techniques (i.e. protein assays, colonic cell isolation, ELISA tests); attended weekly Grand Round lectures; presented abstract for AGA/AASLD at Digestive Disease Week conference in San Diego, CA (May, 1995).
4/91 - 7/91 RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP IN GASTROENTEROLOGY (Bressler Research Bldg, University of Maryland; Baltimore, MD)
Determined the involvement of the DCC tumor suppresser gene in esophageal carcinomas; tested tumor-normal tissue pairs using the polymerase chain reaction and gel electrophoresis; attended several endoscopic procedures and obtained surgical specimens from the pathology department.
